Updated: 2008-02-28 07:10 SHANGHAI: Pop prince Jay Chou has accepted a request by Fudan University's Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts to tutor its students and offer them guidance.
Li Liya, a teacher with the institute, told China Daily yesterday Chou accepted the offer on Sunday when he met more than 1,000 students at the school. The Taiwan-based singer, actor and director was in Shanghai for the premiere of his movie Kungfu Dunk. "He has such a wide appeal to youngsters," Li said. Li said Chou will tutor and guide students in the institute's performing school when he has the time. He chose to be a volunteer, which means the school will not pay him for his services, Li said. "Chou accepted the job happily and said again and again that he would like to talk to the students," Li said. Before Chou, the school had also signed Taiwanese director Ang Lee, who directed Lust, Caution, as an honorary professor, and Eric Tsang, a Hong Kong actor and anchorman, as a guest professor. Chen Xi, a third-year student of TV and broadcasting, said she and her schoolmates have been very excited at the prospect of Chou teaching them, although she admitted that they seldom see those celebrity professors. "We have to fit into their busy schedules," she said. I'd say this fits in with the general principle of 'improvements' here (particularly at my work place) everything is done for 'face' value. The only improvements implemented or suggestions for change incorporated are the ones that can be seen. Visibility is key; any kind of infrastructural problem within the school/company/government is to be ignored until it explodes/implodes. What will Jay Chou 'teach'? Nothing as this probably nothing else than an honorary title, or a marketing scheme to get Chou more time in the places where the majority of his fans are. Singing to the choir, I guess, but I'd would've guessed he's more popular with the high-school crowd. As for corrupt teachers asking for kickbacks or accepting hongbao (red envelopes given out on New Year's day), university heads pocketing tuition funds and so on? The casting call has wrapped up for a Chinese musical version of Carmen. Based on the opera by Georges Bizet, Carmen - Passionate Love will feature Chinese actors while fusing Western arias with Chinese folk music. Model Hu Dong and singer Zhang Mi will play the leading roles, while young stars Ji Jie and Tang Xiao also won big roles.
Zhang Mi After more than half a year of auditions, the newly selected cast appeared at a press conference in Beijing last week. Zhang Mi, who displayed impressive vocal prowess in her song Pandora's Music Box, will star as Hu Ji, an equivalent of Carmen. Hu Dong was hailed as one of 10 best models in the world in 1999 and has since released a few albums. He performs as young officer Zhao Shiji, the Chinese version of Don Hose. Tang Xiao, winner of Supergirl - a vocal competition program modeled after American Idol - plays kind-hearted He Xiaomei. And Ji Jie, who excelled in Superboy, plays two roles: that of a greedy and powerful clan chief and of kungfu hero Huo Zifu. None of the cast has any experience in musicals. Jin Xing, the famed choreographer who was announced to be part of the crew last year, didn't show up. Produced by Global Stage Entertainment & Production Co Ltd Hong Kong, the musical will premiere at the redecorated Century Theater of Beijing on May 15. 2月17日 Shadier than Cote-Des-Neiges Metro StationSpecial Sunday Update!
I'm in an internet cafe, its late... and the place is full to the brim. I don't get it. Why do these people not go home? Thankfully the computer games and so on keep the people busy and complacent - and they couldn't give a fuck that I'm here. Although sometimes some cocksure young guys will look at me and talk about me in a pretty obvious way and obviously in a derogatory way. Why the hate? I don't get it. I put the hoody over, wear the yankee fitted and turn on MP3 player to zone-out. Sometimes I gotta get in a "Montreal state of mind". So I'm listening to some IAM - French Hip-Hop, sure, but it's the language itself that reminds me of those late subway rides with the obvious freaks. Dun-Dun-DUUUUN was the call you'd hear on the speakers in the subway at every stop - then "Station Mont-Royal" the name of my station.

 The average age of people in an internet cafe hovers around the mid-twenties, and I wonder if they're like me - what similarities do we share? The mind wanders. Are they here with friends for a night out? If so, it's hardly a sociable activity - back home, our MTL crew would head out for sheesha, the Arabic fruit-flavoured tobacco water pipe and catch some Lebanese music videos (which meant glimpses of Haifa Wehbe! picture in the Valentine's Day post). It was our usual bullshit session but also a good way to gather the group for a round-up of the latest events - which was essential by the college days - we were all split up by then.
Are they here because they don't have the internet at home? Are they here to get away from home? My students would most likely say that sort of people that come here at this hour of the day are not 'good people'. That's a guess, but I certainly can't picture most of my students in this place.
Anyway, that doesn't matter. If anyone here wanted to really start some shit, there wouldn't be much I could do. It would pretty much be a hundred to one. I've seen fights in the streets where two people go at it and everyone stands around looking but nobody jumps to help/stop the fight. Same for some accidents.

And then I'd infiltrate the Taihu Hotel in order to infiltrate and execute some sort of high-powered diplomat (CAM'RON ?!?!) and excape on a skidoo while the opening credits rolled...

I'm not updating from the school, but from an internet bar on Chongning Road. There's not much that I can report, except for the usual night at the Blue Bar, and I guess I drank too much. It's actually been a long time since I had more than one or two beers in a night, but that was a special time, so I had a little more than usual. Other than that, it's been quiet. I even think there are less fireworks this year than the last. I haven't done anything else except for a dinner with Dan, Grace, Terry, Eric and an American, Rick. It was a fun dinner, with a lot of good laughs. I don't have a lot pictures for you, but the few I have won't be posted until I have access to my school computer. In my case, I'd like to imagine my Colon as an old wooden roller-coaster with nothing but that metal bar pressed to your groin to keep you from falling to your gruesome death.

That's all for today's update! 2月4日 Friendship by way of 300-grit sandpaperNow that Spring Festival has come to haunt us once more, let us reflect on what the TRUE MEANING OF FRIENDSHIP is!
In the past year, I had experienced something that really left disillusioned - it has always been hard for me to make friends that I could trust closely. Many can attest to the very small circle I keep, but after the experiences of last summer where a person I called my best friend came from all the way from back home to spend a summer with me in Wuxi, I was left livid. I cooled off for a while, then of course, news reached me just today, that this person whom I'd not heard from in a year was coming back, albeit to Shanghai this time. What happened in that summer you ask? That person took advantage of me in a way, used my place as a hotel for 2 months and during those months, we had been out for a total of 1 day out. He took advantage of me in that he hid from me the truth of his intentions in coming to Wuxi, and why he'd been so excitedly talking to me about it, filling my ears with how we'd always been such good friends, trusted each other and so on. When I'd found out that he'd done something that not only I thought was very foolish but irresponsible, it was time to put the foot down. It was the timeless tale of a woman getting in between friends, you see. Not so much as a triangle though, more like I wanted to remove the rose-tinted glasses. That's not place or responsabilities, but that person I used to call my friend had used me as a schmuck. You can see pictures of us in one of the albums, but the story behind it all and its details can't be culled from those pictures. 1000 words unfortunately don't always jump out from a picture. I felt, and still feel like a chump for it now.
That person, I now hear, is going to arrive in Shanghai in perhaps a day's time to become an English teacher. Now, I don't believe myself to be a lamb of God sent to teach this complicated language, but I do enjoy it and take it very seriously. I try to improve myself with every class and give it all I got. There's often an attitude towards this job that 'anyone can do it'. Sometime ago some people came to our school practically demanding a job, like it was a handout. It's frustrating - I've met my fair share of people who do the same thing I do in Wuxi, but people whom I'd never trust to teach me anything, much less something I paid so much for. To the person going to Shanghai, I don't doubt your ability - but remember the motives are just as important - your heart as to be in it.
I don't expect to hear from this person, but this being a public forum and the world being a small, tiny place - I'm don't doubt that this post'll reach his ears or that someday there could be a chance encounter. I don't have anything to say except thanks for the lesson in the meaning of true friendship.
